The People Jesus Loved: The Outsiders (Tax Collectors)

Series: The People Jesus Loved

November 02, 2025 | Rev. Brooke Heerwald Steiner

Jesus didn't just love in general and in theory--he loved in the concrete, specific, and everyday actions and places. Our new sermon series looks at the specific people Jesus loved. This week we see him loving tax collectors--calling one to be his disciple. They were some of the most despised people of their day because of how their actions hurt the poor. Who are today's tax collectors? With whom do we not want to be associated? Join us as we wrestle with loving the outsiders in our lives.

Series Information

Jesus didn’t just talk about love—he showed it in real, personal ways. Throughout the Gospels, we see him reaching out to people others ignored, avoided, or looked down on. In this series, The People Jesus Loved, we’ll explore how Jesus loved the outsiders, the hurting, and the overlooked—and how his example invites us to do the same today.
